Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 1 – "Classic of the Classics"

In our "Classic classics" series, we present special highlights of the season.

in 1959, Shostakovich composed his first cello concerto with a great deal of temperament and imagination. It is often said that one can hear a reckoning with Stalin in the concerto. Above all, however, you can hear how confidently Shostakovich knows how to strike very different notes; and how he finds his very own tone.

Our solo cellist Paul Handschke and solo horn player Ivo Gass play the famous opening motif for us.
