Concert recording: Brahms' Piano Quartet No. 1

In January 2023, the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich performed an orchestral version of Brahms' Piano Quartet No. 1 in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein Vienna.

You don't even want to hear the original quartet any more, "the orchestral version sounds so beautiful": this is how the conductor Otto Klemperer once described Arnold Schönberg's orchestration of Brahms' Piano Quartet No. 1. Schönberg was a skilful arranger and earned a good part of his income from orchestral arrangements. When asked why he had chosen this particular work, he replied: "1. I like the piece. 2. It is rarely played. 3. It's always played very badly because the better the pianist is, the louder he plays and you can't hear anything from the strings. I wanted to hear everything once, and I achieved that." What this means can also be heard in the recording of the Vienna concert with Paavo Järvi and the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich.
