Concert recording: Berlioz' "Harold en Italie"
Vienna guest performance with the violist Antoine Tamestit.
At the end of January 2023, the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich performed in one of the most famous halls of all: the Golden Hall of the Musikverein Vienna. Paavo Järvi conducted Berlioz' "Harold en Italie", among other works, with violist Antoine Tamestit taking the solo part.
The Austrian press was enthusiastic. The "Kurier", for example, praised the conductor, "who is always in search of the ideal sound", the orchestra, "which follows him with dedication" - and also the soloist, "who leads us into other worlds with the truthfulness of his playing". In this combination, "extraordinary things" have happened.
Berlioz's work is also extraordinary: it has autobiographical features, but also refers to the title hero of Lord Byron's "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage". And then there was the story of Paganini, who first suggested this composition, then rejected it - and was so moved at the premiere that he not only kissed Berlioz's hand, but also sent him a generous cheque.
