Howard Shore Is Jury President
Howard Shore, who composed the film music for "Lord of the Rings", among others, is presiding over the jury at this year's International Film Music Competition.
The Zurich Film Festival is honouring Canadian composer and three-time Oscar winner Howard Shore with the Career Achievement Award. The award will be presented to him on 5 October 2024 as part of the International Film Music Competition at the Grosse Tonhalle. Shore will preside over the jury for the competition that evening, in which, as every year, three different film scores for a short film will be performed live. In addition, the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, conducted by Frank Strobel, will play excerpts from his own soundtracks - in particular those from the film trilogies "Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit", for which the Canadian has received three Oscars.
As a film music composer, Howard Shore has worked with directors such as David Cronenberg, Martin Scorsese, Tim Burton and Penny Marshall. He has also written other works, such as the opera "The Fly" and the piano concerto "Ruin and Memory".
The International Film Music Competition was launched in 2011 by the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, the Zurich Film Festival and the Forum Filmmusik and has established itself as a leading international film music event in recent years. Each year, a newly composed jury selects three finalists from hundreds of submissions. The high-calibre jury has already been presided over by big names such as Hans Zimmer, Rachel Portman, Mychael Danna, Don Davis, Herbert Grönemeyer and Volker Bertelmann.
