Our Creative Chair Bryce Dessner is at home in many musical worlds. From baroque to blues – elements from all genres and worlds can be found in his music. With "Murder Ballades" he takes up a great American folk music tradition. Murder ballads are, so to speak, musical detective stories; the songs tell of bloody murders. In the seven instrumental ballads, Bryce Dessner is inspired by such songs. His ballads are composed of original compositions and pieces inspired by classical melodies. John Harbison also takes up the American musical tradition in his "Songs America Loves to Sing". Songs familiar to him from his parents' home, such as "Amazing Grace", form the basis of his pieces.
