Toshio Hosokawa

Nature plays a central role in the music of our Creative Chair Toshio Hosokawa; the title of the string quartet "Blossoming" makes this clear. The image of a lotus blossom floating on a pond inspired him here in a very concrete way: A long held note symbolises the surface of the water; little by little, the instruments then begin to form roots underneath that reach into the mud - and at the same time grow into the sky in blossoming beauty. Beyond botanical precision, however, it is also about something else, something more spiritual: the lotus flower is a central Buddhist symbol, it stands for the opening of the mind, for the desire for enlightenment.
