Between baton and table tennis
Petr Popelka and the art of musical dialogue - an evening that resonates.
There are evenings that are more than just a concert - and our meeting with Petr Popelka on 5 December is definitely one of them. The evening began with a programme that covered all facets of emotion: Antoine Tamestit and the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich took us into the painfully beautiful sound world of Alfred Schnittke's Viola Concerto, before Petr Popelka led Schumann's Symphony No. 2 to its finale with his precise yet lively conducting. It was a masterclass in ensemble playing, in which the conductor and the orchestra acted as one - a dynamic that he later introduced us to.
Afterwards, we met Popelka in the Kleine Tonhalle for drinks and snacks. With his open and humorous manner, he gave us an insight into his everyday life as a conductor and compared working with the orchestra to a game of table tennis: "I give an impulse, the orchestra reacts and I play on with the answers." This image brought us closer to the subtleties of his work in an entertaining way.
It was an evening full of inspiration, dialogue and lively encounters - we are already looking forward to the next klubZ experience!
