"He is the perfect soloist for our time," says Paavo Järvi about Víkingur Ólafsson, who is our focus artist this season: "He is a very original artist and a very intelligent person." In the opening concert, the Icelandic pianist will play Brahms' 1st Piano Concerto (the second will follow in March). This year's Creative Chair Anna Thorvaldsdottir also comes from Iceland - "Archora" will be the first work that Paavo Järvi conducts by her. He finds in her music a kind of "general feeling and sound that you get from the Nordic nature". And is fascinated by how she knows how to create a sound with purely acoustic instruments that sometimes seems almost electronic. Is there magic involved? Probably not. But it can be found in Stravinsky's "Firebird" suite, which is based on a thoroughly magical ballet.
