When you think about which film melodies are epic, Ennio Morricone's piercing harmonica motif from "Play Me That Song" immediately comes to mind. But it all started very simply with this iconic melody: The film music composer and director Sergio Leone were classmates as boys in Rome in the 1930s. Over the course of their great international careers, this friendship resulted in six films together, including classics such as "For a Fistful of Dollars". Morricone's touching love theme from Giuseppe Tornatore's cinematic homage to cinema "Cinema Paradiso" is also unforgettable. Bernardo Bertolucci, Roman Polanski, Quentin Tarantino - a small selection of directors for whose films Morricone always composed from Rome. In 2007, he received an honorary Oscar for his life's work, which he accepted in broken English. Morricone saw himself - artistically influenced by Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen and John Cage - as a composer who created piano concertos, choral works and chamber music, among other things. This large part of his work has received little public attention. Only recently have lesser-known works from Ennio Morricone's personal archive in Rome been published. Under the direction of Frank Strobel, they will be performed exclusively and for the first time in Switzerland together with some of his unforgotten classics.
