Joseph Haydn Sinfonie Es-Dur Hob. I:103 «Mit dem Paukenwirbel»
There are usually no stage sets for orchestral concerts. But this lunchtime concert, conducted by Dutch baroque specialist Jan Willem de Vriend, is nevertheless conceived as a kind of stage set: This is because the highly idiosyncratic French composer Jean-Féry Rebel set the creation of the world to music in 1737 under the title "Les Élémens" - and in doing so, organised chaos at the beginning with qualities that are as vivid as they are avant-garde. Joseph Haydn also had a great sense for theatrical effects, which earned his famous Symphony No. 103 the nickname "Timpani Roll".
