It is difficult to speak of Franz Schubert as a "late work" because he only lived to the age of 31. Despite this short life span, the Austrian composer created an immense number of works, some of which only received the attention they deserve from today's perspective after his death in 1828. This was not possible in the case of his String Quintet in C major, however, as it was only published posthumously in 1853. Nevertheless, or perhaps precisely for this reason, this piece is explicitly referred to as a late work, which differs drastically from the previous work. With its overlong first movement or the only vaguely recognisable keys in the trio of the third movement, Schubert wrote musical statements that - as the music world still agrees today - were far ahead of his time. Schubert's String Quintet in C major should therefore not be missing from the theme of this season's Chamber Music Matinees "Masterpieces of Chamber Music".
