Christian Schmitt
Organ / *1976, Germany
This season, organist Christian Schmitt is our focus artist.
Christian Schmitt has dedicated himself, body and soul, to the organ. Not only is he one of the world’s most sought-after organists, but also a member of various juries, an expert on concert organs and a passionate teacher. He has a long-standing association with the Tonhalle Zürich, having assisted as a specialist with the construction of the new organ. It is therefore only fitting that he will now be performing on the instrument in front of an audience!
Christian Schmitt likes to include works of the 20th and 21st centuries in his programmes, performing them with just as much charisma and virtuosity as he does when playing compositions of older organ literature. He has played on the world’s most beautiful organs under the most renowned conductors, and he knows the peculiarities of countless instruments. For every organ is indeed different – which is frequently a cause for joy, but sometimes less so. This inspired him to develop a digital version of the Philharmonie Essen’s organ in close cooperation with an acoustics company. Since this instrument is transportable, he can now also perform on «his» instrument whenever he wishes.
He regularly shares his enthusiasm for music, and especially for the organ, with children and young people through his involvement in Germany’s «Rhapsody in School» music education project.
