Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 has probably never been heard like this before: our focus artist Wayne Marshall introduces it with organ improvisations. And for once, Paavo Järvi is not conducting the original version, but Mahler's arrangement - in keeping with our Mahler cycle. This version is much more opulent in sound than Beethoven's original: The wind instrumentation is amplified, and wind instruments also frequently play string parts. Mahler, who was also the most successful conductor of his time, wanted to enhance the effect of the music with this instrumentation - also in view of the fact that concert halls had become much larger since Beethoven's time. The arrangement was composed between 1898 and 1901, just a few years after the construction of the Tonhalle Zurich.
