A long-standing artistic friendship links our Creative Chair, Thomas Adès, and our Featured Artist, Kirill Gerstein. In the week leading up to this concert, they will perform a programme conducted by Thomas Adès, featuring his piano concerto, which was composed for Kirill Gerstein. And now they will take their places at the piano together: for a pianistic distillation of Adès’s successful chamber opera ‘Powder Her Face’. Three pieces by Ligeti, each based on a relatively simple musical idea that subsequently transforms and branches out in constant motion – whilst also weaving in small homages to the minimalists Steve Reich and Terry Riley, as well as to Chopin and Schumann. And finally, for Messiaen’s *Visions de l’Amen*, which the composer wrote for himself and his future wife, Yvonne Loriod.
