DESCRIPTION:Our focus artist Sol Gabetta not only plays the cello hit parade, but also rarely performed works. For example, the cello concerto by Edouard Lalo, of which only the "Symphonie espagnole" has made it into the core repertoire. Strange, really, because the cello concerto, which premiered in 1877, combines many of the things one might wish for in this genre: elegant melodies, plenty of warmth in the lower registers, virtuoso passagework, Spanish echoes here and there in keeping with the fashion of the time ... Above all, however, the concerto has enough musical substance not to be lost next to a symphonic heavyweight like Bruckner's Symphony No. 7.
