300 years ago, on Good Friday 1727, Bach's St Matthew Passion was premiered in Leipzig's St Thomas' Church. Bach had taken up his post as St Thomas' Cantor four years earlier, a position he would hold until his death in 1750. At the time, he could hardly have imagined that this passion would still be one of the core works in the repertoire today. It is so much so that ensembles are formed especially for it: Václav Luks certainly dreamed of performing a Bach Passion when he founded Collegium 1704 and Collegium Vocale 1704, which perform on period instruments, in 2005. These ensembles, based in Prague and Dresden, have since made an international name for themselves, not only with works by Bach, but also with others.
